Why taping is the most important part of a drywall job

You can hang drywall poorly and tape it well and the wall still looks fine after paint. The reverse is not true. Bad taping shows up in raking light, pendant downlight, and any glossy finish — and you cannot fix it without re-skimming the entire wall. We treat taping as the centrepiece of every job, not the cleanup at the end.

Our taping and mudding service is offered as part of a full drywall installation, or as standalone work when you (or another framer) hung the board and want a clean professional finish. We bring the same three-coat process, the same materials, and the same warranty whether we hung the board ourselves or arrived to tape someone else's hang.

What's included in a taping quote

  • Paper tape on inside corners and seams. Mesh tape is faster but weaker — paper tape is the residential standard for a reason. Embedded in setting-type compound for a hard bond.
  • Metal or paper-faced metal corner bead on outside corners. We prefer paper-faced metal (No-Coat or similar) for cleaner finishing and better resistance to chipping.
  • Three coats of compound — tape coat (setting compound), fill coat (all-purpose ready-mix), finish coat (topping compound).
  • Sanding between coats with HEPA vacuum sanders to control dust. Final sand to Level 4 specification.
  • Drywall primer (PVA) rolled on the entire surface. Primer is the painter's responsibility on some jobs — we can include or exclude depending on your preference.
  • L-bead or J-bead at wall-ceiling joints where seasonal truss uplift could crack a standard tape line.
  • Daily and final clean-up. Vacuum at end of every day. Final clean before walk-through.
  • 1-year workmanship warranty on every taped surface.

Our three-coat process, explained

  1. Tape coat (Day 1). Paper tape embedded in setting-type compound (CGC Easy Sand 90 for residential, Easy Sand 45 when the schedule demands faster set). Setting-type bonds chemically rather than just air-drying, so the tape locks down hard with minimal shrinkage. Inside corners get a tape-on-tape application; outside corners get a metal or paper-faced metal bead.
  2. Fill coat (Day 2). Once the tape coat sets (typically next day), we apply a wider second coat using all-purpose ready-mix mud (CGC Sheetrock Plus 3) and a 10–12 inch knife to feather the edges out beyond the tape. This is the coat that builds out the seam to be flush with the wall surface.
  3. Finish coat (Day 3). Final pass with topping compound (CGC Sheetrock Topping) and a 14 inch knife. Topping is softer and sands cleaner — leaves a glassy finish. This is the coat that determines the visible quality of the wall.
  4. Sand and prime (Day 4). HEPA vacuum sanders for dust control. Hand-sand in corners. Drywall primer (PVA) rolled on the entire surface. Walk the wall under raking light before calling it done.

Level 4 vs Level 5 — what you actually need

The Gypsum Association defines six finish levels (0 through 5). For most residential and commercial projects only two matter:

  • Level 4 is the residential standard. Tape coat + fill coat + finish coat, sanded smooth. Once primed with a quality drywall primer, the seams disappear under flat or eggshell paint. This is what 95% of GTA homes get.
  • Level 5 adds an additional skim coat over the entire wall surface. The whole wall becomes uniform — no sheen difference between mud and paper. Recommended for: open-concept living rooms with raking light, satin or higher sheen paint, feature walls, gloss enamels, and any wall that will be hit by direct downlighting.

Most homeowners do Level 4 throughout and Level 5 only in the rooms that warrant it. We will tell you honestly which rooms need the upgrade — paying for Level 5 in a closet is a waste. Read the full breakdown in our taping levels post.

Materials and standards we use

  • Setting compound (tape coat): CGC Easy Sand 90, Easy Sand 45 for tighter schedules, Easy Sand 20 for emergencies.
  • All-purpose ready-mix (fill coat): CGC Sheetrock Plus 3, USG All Purpose, or CertainTeed ProRoc All Purpose.
  • Topping compound (finish coat): CGC Sheetrock Topping or USG Topping. Always topping for the final pass — never all-purpose.
  • Tape: Saint-Gobain or USG paper tape on flat seams and inside corners. Mesh tape only for repairs in setting compound.
  • Corner bead: No-Coat or Trim-Tex paper-faced metal on outside corners. Plain metal bead on commercial work where appearance is less critical.
  • Primer: Para Premium PVA Drywall Primer or equivalent 100% acrylic drywall primer.
  • Dust-control mud: CGC Sheetrock Dust Control for occupied homes — additives bind dust to a heavier particle that drops to the floor instead of floating.

Common project types

Tape-only on owner-hung drywall

If you hung your basement or addition yourself (or a framer hung it for you), we will come in and tape. Charges a small premium because we re-screw any popped sheets, plane high seams, replace bowed sheets, and add corner bead before we tape — but the result is the same clean finish as if we had hung it. Common in Burlington, Oakville, and Milton where DIY-handy homeowners want to save labour on the hang but still want a pro finish.

Full hang-and-tape residential

Our most common job. Crew arrives with material, hangs in 1–2 days, tapes over 3–4 days, primes and walks on day 5–6. Most basements and main-floor renovations across Toronto, Mississauga, and Vaughan follow this rhythm.

Level 5 feature wall finishes

Skim coat across an entire wall — typically a main living room with raking light, a feature dining wall, or a master bedroom accent wall. Adds about 15–25% to the cost of taping that room. Shines in homes with floor-to-ceiling windows or feature pendant lighting.

Commercial taping

Office tenant improvements, retail buildouts, restaurant fits — typically taped to Level 4 with select areas at Level 5 for storefront walls. Rated assemblies (1-hour fire, 2-hour fire, STC-rated) get the same three-coat process plus inspection sign-off documentation.

Re-tape over old failed seams

Older homes sometimes need entire walls re-taped where the original tape has lifted, cracked at corners, or failed under repeated humidity cycles. We cut out the failed seam, re-tape with paper tape and setting compound, three-coat the area, and feather mud past the original line.

Standalone taping (we did not hang)

If you have already hung the board (or another contractor did and walked away), we will come in and tape. We charge a small premium for standalone taping because we have to re-screw any popped sheets, plane any high seams, replace any bowed sheets, and sometimes correct a hung corner before we tape. The premium is worth it — clean tape on someone else's hang still requires our quality control. We will tell you on the site visit whether a hang is good enough to tape clean or whether spot-replacement is needed first.

Why hire pros over a DIY tape job

Hanging drywall is genuinely accessible to a careful DIYer. Taping is not. The difference between an amateur tape job and a pro one is invisible until the primer goes on, and at that point the lighting tells the truth. Common DIY mistakes: feathering the finish coat too narrow (3–4 inches instead of 12–14), using all-purpose mud for the finish coat instead of topping, sanding too aggressively and breaking through to the tape, mixing setting compound too dry or too wet, and skipping the prime coat entirely. Each of these makes the wall fail under raking light and forces the painter to either skim the whole wall or accept a visibly mediocre result.

Pricing and timeline

GTA taping and mudding typically falls between $1.20 and $2.50 per square foot. Level 5 finish adds another $0.40–0.80 per square foot depending on the room. Taping & mudding FAQ

What is the difference between Level 4 and Level 5?+

Level 4 is three coats of mud over the seams (tape coat, fill coat, finish coat), sanded flat, ready for primer and paint. Level 5 adds a full skim coat across the entire wall — eliminates any sheen difference between joint compound and the drywall paper face. Level 5 is required for high-sheen paints, raking light from large windows, and feature walls in open-concept rooms.

Can you tape over old drywall?+

Yes, if the old drywall is sound and securely fastened. We re-tape failed seams, skim coat over textured finishes, and patch holes — but we do not skim over loose popcorn texture without scraping it first. Existing drywall that has popped screws gets re-screwed; high seams get planed; bowed sheets get cut out and replaced.

How long does taping and mudding take?+

Tape coat day 1, fill coat day 2, finish coat day 3, sanding day 4. Add a day for Level 5 skim. Larger jobs run multiple rooms in parallel so the wall-clock can be similar. We can compress the schedule slightly with quick-set 20-, 45-, or 90-minute setting compounds when a deadline demands it, though that reduces forgiveness for working time.

Do you sand by hand or with vacuum sanders?+

We use HEPA-filtered vacuum-attached sanders for occupied homes — the dust capture is roughly 95% at the source. We hand-sand corners and detailed finish areas for control. Hand-sanding alone in an occupied home creates an unmanageable dust problem; we never do it that way.

What joint compound do you use?+

Setting-type compound (CGC Easy Sand 90 or 45) for the tape coat, because it bonds harder and shrinks less. All-purpose ready-mix (CGC Sheetrock Plus 3) for the fill coat. Topping compound (CGC Sheetrock Topping) for the finish coat — softer, sands cleaner, leaves a glassy surface. Dust-control mud is used in occupied homes for an additional dust reduction.

Can you do a Level 5 finish in a single room?+

Yes. Most homeowners pick Level 5 only for the rooms that warrant it — typically the main living room, dining room, and a master bedroom feature wall — and run plain Level 4 elsewhere. We can mix levels within the same project at no extra coordination cost.

What happens if I see a defect after the painters arrive?+

Call us. Our 1-year workmanship warranty covers tape lifts, screw pops, corner cracks, and any sanding marks that show through paint. We come back, fix the defect, and re-prime if needed. Most warranty calls resolve in a single 1–2 hour visit.
