Drywall repair across Toronto and the GTA
Doorknobs that hit walls. Furniture corners that punch through. Cracks above doors and windows. Screw pops that show up after a humidity swing. Drywall takes a beating and eventually you need a real fix — not a smear of caulk and a coat of paint.
Our drywall repair team handles small jobs that bigger contractors will not bother with. Most repairs are completed in a single visit, with feathered mud and matched paint that makes the patch invisible. We are in Toronto, Mississauga, Scarborough, and the rest of the GTA every working day, so booking a small repair does not mean waiting weeks.
What's included in a repair quote
- On-site assessment. For larger or trickier repairs we visit free; for small repairs you can text photos and we quote from the photos.

- Clean square or rectangular cut-out — never a ragged hole.
- Backer piece behind the cut-out for solid mounting of the patch piece.
- Tape and three-coat finish with feathering 14+ inches past the patch.
- Texture matching if your wall has texture — orange peel, knockdown, stomp, swirl.
- Drywall primer over the patch and feathered area.
- Paint touch-up using your existing paint or a colour-matched chip.
- Daily clean-up with HEPA vacuum.
- 1-year workmanship warranty.
What we repair
- Small holes (under fist-size) — setting compound patch with paper tape, sanded, primed, painted. About $150 per visit.
- Mid-size holes (doorknob hole, kid-size) — backer piece + patch piece, taped, three-coat, sanded, primed, painted. About $200–300.
- Large holes (over 6 inches) — clean cut-out, full sheet-piece patch, taped, three-coat, sanded, primed, painted. About $350–650 depending on access and ceiling vs wall.
- Cracks — paper-tape repair over the crack, three-coat feathering, sand, prime, paint.
- Screw pops & nail pops — re-driven, re-screwed, re-taped. We can do many at once on a single visit ($25–40 per pop in volume).
- Corner damage — replace the corner bead, three-coat, sand, prime, paint. About $200–400 per corner.
- Water-stain patches — leak source must be fixed first; we cut out, dry, replace, finish. (See our ceiling repair page for water-damage ceiling work.)
- Garbage chute / pet damage — large hole repairs in townhomes, basements, and garages.
- Mis-cut electrical box openings — patch tight to the box, taped, three-coat, finished.
- Curtain-rod and shelf-anchor damage — patch and reinforce with backing for proper anchor reinstall.
- Door-frame and trim removal damage — common after replacing interior doors or moving baseboards.
Our repair process
- Assess and quote. For small repairs, photo quote. For larger repairs, free site visit and written quote within 24 hours.
- Prep the area. Drop sheet floor, zip wall larger work areas, cover any HVAC return.
- Clean cut-out. Square or rectangular cut around the damage with a drywall saw or Roto-Zip. Never a ragged hole.
- Backer. For mid and large holes, install a backer piece (drywall scrap or a 1x3 furring strip) behind the opening to give the patch piece something solid to fasten to.
- Patch piece. Cut a fresh piece of matching board to fit the cut-out exactly. Screw to backer.
- Tape coat. Paper tape and setting compound around the seam.
- Fill coat. All-purpose ready-mix and a 10-inch knife.
- Finish coat. Topping compound and a 14-inch knife. Feather 14+ inches past the patch.
- Sand and prime. HEPA sander, then drywall primer rolled over the patch.
- Texture match (if needed). Sample boards, test pattern, then apply.
- Paint touch-up. Existing paint or colour-matched chip.
- Final clean and walk. HEPA vacuum, debris removal, walk-through with the homeowner.
Texture matching
Some GTA homes have textured walls or ceilings — orange peel, knockdown, stomped, swirl. We can match all common textures. We bring sample boards, test the texture against your wall, and adjust spray pressure or trowel pattern until the match is invisible. Smooth-finish walls (the standard in newer construction) need no texture matching.
For pre-1980 homes with popcorn ceiling texture, we recommend a $75 asbestos lab test before scraping. Asbestos in textured ceiling material was common until the late 1970s in Ontario. If positive, we coordinate with an asbestos abatement contractor for safe removal, then we drywall.
Materials we use for repairs
- Matching board: CGC Sheetrock 1/2" or 5/8", green board for bathrooms, cement board behind tile.
- Setting compound: CGC Easy Sand 90 (or 45 for tighter schedules) for tape coat — bonds harder than ready-mix.
- Ready-mix all-purpose: CGC Sheetrock Plus 3 for fill coat.
- Topping compound: CGC Sheetrock Topping for finish coat — softer, sands cleaner.
- Tape: Paper tape on flat seams and corners. Mesh tape only with setting compound for emergency repairs.
- Corner bead: No-Coat or Trim-Tex paper-faced metal where a corner needs replacing.
- Stain-blocking primer: KILZ Original or Zinsser BIN over water-stained patches.
- Drywall primer: Para Premium PVA over the rest.
Paint touch-ups
For repairs we feather paint beyond the patch onto the original wall. If you have leftover paint we use it; otherwise we colour-match from a chip. Note that older paint can fade slightly from the original — sometimes we recommend painting wall-to-wall or corner-to-corner so the touch-up is invisible. We will tell you on the visit when paint touch-up will work and when wall-to-wall paint is the better answer.
Common repair scenarios by city
Different parts of the GTA generate different repair patterns. Toronto and North York condo unit owners call most often for water-stain patches after upstairs floods and for door-knob holes from rental tenants moving out. Scarborough and Etobicoke mid-century bungalows generate steady screw-pop and hairline crack repairs from the original 1960s drywall reaching its sixth decade. Markham and Vaughan newer subdivisions tend to need texture-matched patches in family rooms and basements. We have crews comfortable with each.
Insurance and condo work
We do regular drywall-repair work for insurance-claim ceiling damage and condo unit repairs. Itemized invoices in formats your adjuster expects, and we can coordinate scope and photos directly with the claim file. Most major GTA insurers (Intact, Aviva, Wawanesa, TD Insurance, Belairdirect) recognize our invoicing format on first submission.
For older Toronto and Hamilton homes with lath-and-plaster walls, see our drywall vs plaster comparison for repair-vs-replace tradeoffs. For pricing context across all our services, the installation cost guide shows where small repairs sit on the broader pricing scale, and our hiring guide lays out the right questions to ask before paying any contractor for a patch job.
Why hire pros over a DIY patch
Small drywall patches are the most common DIY trap in home maintenance. The patch itself is easy — anyone can spread mud over a hole. The problem is everything around it: feathering wide enough that the patch disappears under primer (most DIYers feather 3–4 inches; the right answer is 12–14), texture-matching invisibly (most DIYers spray too thick, too thin, or in the wrong pattern), and avoiding the chalky paint sheen difference that comes from priming over a patched area without proper PVA primer. Our typical drywall repair invoice is $150–350 — about an hour or two of skilled labour. We see DIY patches on roughly half the homes we visit for unrelated reasons, and the homeowner usually asks us to redo them. Pay once.
Drywall repair FAQ
How much does a small drywall repair cost?+
Most small repairs (a fist-size hole, a doorknob hole, screw pops, hairline cracks) fall between $150 and $350 per visit including patch, mud, sand, prime and a touch of matching paint. We do not charge a separate trip fee for repairs in our regular GTA service area.
Will I see the patch after?+
No. Patches feathered properly disappear under primer and paint. We feather mud 14+ inches in every direction past the patch, sand to match, and texture-match if your wall has any. We touch up the paint to blend the area. Older walls sometimes need wall-to-wall paint to avoid sheen mismatch — we will tell you up-front when that is the case.
Do you do same-day repairs?+
Sometimes. For repairs that need to be photographed (insurance), are critical to a closing date, or are blocking another trade we will fit them in within 48–72 hours. Same-day depends on schedule. Call early in the morning for the best chance.
Can you fix nail pops?+
Yes. Drive the popped screw deeper, add a new screw 1.5 inches away into the same stud, re-tape the small area with paper tape and setting compound, three-coat, sand, prime, paint. We can do many at once on the same visit — most homes have 5–15 nail/screw pops accumulating from seasonal humidity cycles.
Will you match the texture on my wall?+
Yes — orange peel, knockdown, stomped, swirl. We bring sample boards, test the texture against your existing wall, and adjust spray pressure or trowel pattern until the match is invisible. Smooth-finish walls (the standard in newer GTA construction) need no texture matching.
Can you patch around an electrical box that was cut wrong?+
Yes. We cut a clean square or rectangle around the box, fit a backer piece if needed, install a small patch piece tight to the box, tape, three-coat, sand, prime, paint. Common when an electrician cuts a hole the wrong size or in the wrong spot.
