GTA drywall taping and mudding typically falls between $1.20 and $2.50 per square foot for a Level 4 finish on already-hung drywall. Level 5 adds another $0.40–0.80 per sq ft.

When you should pay for Level 5
Level 5 is not a quality upgrade for every wall — it is a problem-solver for specific lighting situations. Pay for it when:
- Walls catch raking light from large windows or sliding doors.
- You are using satin, eggshell with high-LRV, or any sheen above eggshell.
- Ceiling has feature pendants or spotlights that hit walls at a sharp angle.
- Open-concept living spaces where multiple light sources cross.
- Feature walls in master bedrooms, dining rooms, or main living rooms.
Skip Level 5 in: closets, mechanical rooms, bedrooms with diffused light, hallways, and any wall that will be covered by tile, wallpaper, or panelling.
Why prices vary so much
- Ceiling height. 8 ft baseline. 10+ ft adds 15–25%. 14+ ft cathedral adds 30%+.
- Number of corners. Small rooms have more corner-feet per square foot of wall, so they tape slower.
- Number of openings. Each window, door, and pass-through has corner bead. A 12-window solarium has 24 corners just from windows.
- Existing condition. Re-taping over old work that has popped or cracked takes longer than fresh hung drywall.
- Texture. Smooth Level 4 is the default. Knockdown, stomp, or orange-peel texture changes the line.

How is taping cost calculated?+
By square foot of wall and ceiling surface that needs taping, with adjustments for ceiling height, finish level, and number of corners.
Why is Level 5 more expensive than Level 4?+
Level 5 adds a full skim coat across the entire wall surface, plus an additional sand. That is roughly an extra labour-day per room.
Can taping cost less than $1.20 per square foot?+
Sometimes — large open rectangular rooms with simple geometry quote out lower. Small rooms with many corners and short walls cost more per square foot.
Does taping include primer?+
Yes — drywall primer (PVA) is included in our taping quotes. The painter then applies their topcoat.
