How much does drywall installation cost in Toronto and the GTA? +

Most GTA residential drywall installation projects fall between $2.50 and $4.50 per square foot, including hanging, taping, and a Level 4 finish ready for paint. Basements run a little higher because of cuts and ceilings, and a Level 5 finish typically adds 15–25% for the extra skim coat. Our written estimate breaks every line out so you can compare contractors fairly.

How much does just taping and mudding cost? +

Taping-only (you supply hung drywall) typically runs $1.20 to $2.50 per square foot in the GTA depending on ceiling height, room count, and finish level. We can do tape only when you want to hang the board yourself or when you have a framer on site already.

What is the difference between Level 4 and Level 5 finish? +

Level 4 is the residential standard — three coats of mud over the tape, sanded flat, then primed by your painter. Level 5 adds an additional skim coat across the entire wall surface, eliminating any sheen difference between mud and paper. You want Level 5 for raking-light areas like open-concept living rooms, walls hit by feature pendant lighting, or any wall painted in a high-sheen finish.

How long does drywall installation take? +

A typical 1,200 sq ft basement takes about 4–6 working days from start of hang to paint-ready. Single-room repairs are usually one day. Whole-house renovations depend on size but our crews routinely hang and tape 3,000+ sq ft per week.

Are you licensed and insured? +

Yes. GTA Drywall and Taping carries $5M general liability and full WSIB coverage. We will provide a current certificate of insurance for any commercial site, condo board, or property manager who needs one — usually within an hour of asking.

Do you provide written estimates? +

Always. Every quote is written, itemized by room or area, lists the finish level and board type, and includes the timeline. Verbal quotes invite arguments later — we put it on paper.

How fast can you start a project? +

Repairs and small jobs (under one day): 48–72 hours typical. Full residential installations: 1–2 weeks lead time. Larger commercial fits: book 3–4 weeks ahead. If you have a hard deadline, tell us and we will work to hit it.

Do you handle dust? +

Yes. We use HEPA-filtered vacuum sanders, plastic zip walls when sanding inside an occupied home, and we drop sheet every floor between the work area and the door. We are not perfect — drywall sanding always makes some dust — but we are far cleaner than the average crew.

What kind of drywall do you use? +

We hang only major North American brands — typically CertainTeed, CGC Sheetrock, or USG. Standard rooms get 1/2 inch panels. Ceilings, garages, and code-required areas get 5/8 inch Type X fire-rated. Bathrooms get green board moisture-resistant panels. We will tell you exactly what is going up before we install.

Do you install soundproof drywall? +

Yes — we install QuietRock and similar viscoelastic damped panels for media rooms, home theatres, condo party walls, and shared-wall townhouse renovations. Soundproofing is more about the assembly than the panel, so we will discuss insulation, decoupling clips, and double-layered drywall as part of your quote.

Can you remove popcorn ceilings? +

Yes, both wet-scrape removal and skim-over jobs. Popcorn ceiling removal in pre-1980 homes may require asbestos testing first — we recommend a $75 lab test before scraping any older ceiling. Once cleared, we scrape, skim flat, prime, and you have a smooth modern ceiling.

Do you fix water-damaged ceilings? +

Constantly. Toilet leaks, dishwasher overflows, AC condensation, condo unit-above floods — we cut out the damaged drywall, dry the cavity, replace insulation if needed, and patch invisibly. Most ceiling water damage repairs are done in one or two visits.

Can you match existing texture? +

Yes. Whether the existing finish is smooth, knockdown, orange peel, or stomped, we can match the texture. We bring sample boards and test the match against your wall before committing to the full repair.

What is your warranty? +

One year of workmanship coverage on every job. If a tape line lifts, a screw pops, or a corner cracks within 12 months, we come back and fix it at no charge. Most reputable contractors offer this — and we put it in writing on every quote.

Do you work on weekends? +

Saturdays yes, Sundays only for emergency water-damage repairs. We work 7am to 7pm Monday through Saturday and try not to be loudest in residential streets before 8am out of respect for neighbours.

Do you work in occupied homes? +

Yes — most of our renovation work is in occupied homes. We zip wall the work area, drop sheet the path to the truck, vacuum at the end of every day, and try to leave the house as clean as we found it. We can also stage the project so you keep using the kitchen or master bath while we work elsewhere.

Do you do framing or just drywall? +

We focus on drywall and taping. We will do small framing fixes — straightening a stud, sistering a header, adding strapping for ceiling sag — when needed for a clean drywall job. For larger framing or structural work we partner with two GTA framers we trust.

Can you paint after drywall? +

We do not paint as a service, but we coordinate with painters constantly. If you do not have one we can recommend two GTA painting companies we have worked with for years. Many of our clients use both crews back-to-back so the schedule stays tight.

Do you supply the materials? +

Yes — drywall, screws, tape, joint compound, corner bead, primer, and any specialty boards (fire-rated, moisture-resistant, soundproof) are included in the quote. You do not need to source anything yourself unless you specifically want to.

How do you price commercial work? +

Commercial drywall is bid by area and by complexity. Office buildouts, restaurant fits, retail TI work, and condo amenity spaces all have different scheduling and inspection requirements. We bid commercial jobs from architectural drawings within 5–7 business days.

Do you do new home construction? +

Yes. We hang and tape new builds for several smaller GTA developers and custom builders. We can run multiple crews to keep up with framers across a multi-unit project.

Will the new drywall match the rest of my house? +

For a repair patch, yes — we feather mud beyond the patch, sand to match, and texture-match if the surrounding wall has any. For a full new room or addition the new walls go up smoother than your old walls because we work to current Level 4 standards.

Can you fix a hole in the wall? +

Yes. Small holes (under fist size) get a setting-compound patch — about $150 visit. Mid-size holes (door-knob hole, kid-size) get a backer and patch piece — about $200–300. Large holes get a cut-out and full sheet-piece patch with new tape — typically $350–650 depending on access.

Why is drywall so dusty? +

Setting-type joint compound is mostly powdered gypsum — when sanded smooth it generates fine dust. We minimize this with mesh sanders attached to HEPA vacuums and dust-control mud (which has additives that bind dust to a heavier particle that drops to the floor instead of floating).

Do you take credit cards? +

Yes — we accept Visa, Mastercard, and e-transfer. Most clients pay 50% to start and 50% on completion. Larger projects can be staged into thirds. We never ask for full payment up front.

Are estimates really free? +

Yes. We do not charge for quotes, even for larger sites. The only exception is consulting work where you specifically want us to advise without bidding — that is billable, and we tell you up front.

Do you do drywall on cathedral ceilings? +

Yes — we have proper drywall lifts and rolling scaffolding for ceilings up to 22 feet. Cathedral and vaulted ceilings cost more per square foot because of access and time, but we hang and tape them regularly across Vaughan and Oakville custom homes.

Will you tape over a popcorn ceiling? +

No — we never skim-coat over loose-bonded popcorn texture. The skim layer will not bond properly and will crack. We scrape first, then skim. If the texture is well-bonded, sometimes we can score it and skim, but that is the exception not the rule.

How long should I wait before painting new drywall? +

After we finish sanding, give the joint compound 24 hours to fully dry, then prime with a quality drywall primer (PVA or 100% acrylic). Once primed, the topcoat can go on the next day. Painting too soon traps moisture in the mud and you get a poor bond.

What does it mean when the drywall is "screw popping"? +

A screw pop is when a screw head pushes out from behind the joint compound, creating a visible bump on the wall. It is usually caused by either the drywall being installed before the framing dried (so the wood shrinks and pushes the screw) or by drywall flexing slightly with seasonal humidity. Repair is fast: drive the screw deeper, add a new screw 1.5 inches away, re-tape and re-mud the small area, sand, prime, paint.
